Joining a Network
To join a Windows XP Professional computer in a network, you need to follow the below steps.

  1. Give unique computer name.
  2. Provide unique IP address.
  3. Give the domain name or workgroup name.
To give your computer a unique name right click My Computer > Properties > and click Computer name.  Here you can give your computer name and domain/workgroup name.
To provide the unique IP address to your computer click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click Local Area Network.
In the General tab click TCP/IP and click Properties.  Here you can provide the unique IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS if any.  Once you provide the unique computer name, domain/workgroup name and IP address, your computer will be part of your network and you will be able to share the data and resources with the other computers in the network.
